The Ballston Spa Breeders’ Cup Stakes is an American race for thoroughbred horses open to fillies and mares, age three and up, on the turf at Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, New York. Run at a distance of one and one-sixteenth miles, it’s a Grade II race offering a purse of $200,000.
From its inception in 1989 until 1993 the race was run as the Aqueduct Budweiser Breeders’ Cup at a distance of one mile. It was also formerly known as the Saratoga Breeders’ Cup Handicap until being renamed in honor of Ballston Spa, New York, a small town just south of Saratoga Springs.
Alinghi , was sent out as the 9-10 favorite in an 11-horse field, won the Group 3 Ballston Spa Breeders’ Cup Handicap for fillies and mares by 1 1/4 lengths over a turf course labeled good defeating USA Group 1 winner Que Puntual. She covered 1 1/16 miles in 1:40.30 before a crowd of 12,376.
Alinghi, away from the races since late March, was making her first start outside Australia and first start for trainer Bobby Frankel. She received a patient ride from Champion US jockey Edgar Prado, who sat nearly 10 lengths off the quick early pace set by Lentil and La Reina. Prado let Alinghi loose heading into the final turn, and moved four wide to collar Que Puntual. She drew clear in the final stages under a strong drive from Prado.
Although Alinghi was making her first start at over 1600m she definately lived up to Australian champion reputation. An Australian-bred 4-year-old, Alinghi was privately purchased by owners Alan Jones, John Leaver, and John Messara for a reported $2.2 million during the spring and was then sent to Frankel’s Stable in the USA.
